Volunteers sorting canned food donations

We came out of nonprofit group insurance programs. We know how the pooled programs price, what they cover, and where a standard market beats them.

We know the group programs

Our team has administered nonprofit workers' compensation and vehicle pools. If a pool is the right answer for you, we will say so.

The program we build

The pieces, and what each one is actually for.

Line

Abuse and molestation

The coverage that decides whether a social service organization survives a claim. Occurrence versus claims made, defense treatment, and sublimits all vary wildly.

Line

Professional liability

Counseling, case management, and program services. Your general liability excludes the professional services your mission depends on.

Line

Directors and officers

Board exposure, employment practices, and funder requirements, usually written as a combined nonprofit form.

Line

Transportation

Client transport, program vans, and volunteer drivers under hired and non-owned. The most frequently underinsured exposure in the sector.

Line

Workers' compensation

Human services class codes, volunteer coverage elections, and the group program comparison.

Line

Special events and fundraisers

Liquor liability, participant waivers, and the certificates the venue will demand.

What we see going wrong

Nonprofit programs get assembled over years by different brokers and boards. The gaps are predictable.

  • Volunteers treated as covered employees when the workers' compensation election was never actually filed.
  • Abuse coverage written on a claims made form with a retro date reset at some forgotten carrier change.
  • Client transportation running on personal vehicles with no hired and non-owned coverage in place.
  • Grant and contract insurance requirements that nobody compared against the actual policy before signing.
  • Program growth into new services, with the certificate of insurance still describing what the organization did five years ago.

How we work with nonprofit boards

Work the inputs before working the market.

Step 01

Read the funding agreements

Government contracts and foundation grants carry insurance requirements with real teeth. We audit compliance before a monitor does.

Step 02

Compare pool against standard market

Group programs, JPAs, and standard carriers priced side by side with the coverage differences made explicit.

Step 03

Present to the board in plain language

A one page exposure summary and a documented recommendation that satisfies the finance committee and the minutes.

Step 04

Support the staff, not just the ED

Program directors get direct access for certificates, driver adds, and event coverage without going through a service queue.

Questions we get

Straight answers.

Should we join a group program or buy in the standard market?

It depends on your loss history, your growth trajectory, and your tolerance for assessment risk. Pools reward stable, low loss members and can be very hard to leave. We will run both and show you the real comparison rather than the pitch.

Are our volunteers covered?

Only if you elected volunteer coverage and the election is on file, and only for the classes described. General liability treats volunteers as insureds under most forms, but that is liability protection, not injury coverage for the volunteer.

A funder is requiring limits we cannot afford. What now?

Most requirements are negotiable once someone explains the structure. Where they are not, an umbrella is usually cheaper than raising every underlying limit. We handle that conversation with the funder directly when it helps.
