Commercial
auto and fleet

A row of commercial trucks parked in a yard

Nuclear verdicts made auto the hardest line in commercial insurance. The accounts that get paid well are the ones that can prove how they hire and monitor drivers.

Symbol 1 or nothing

Half the coverage gaps we find in auto come down to which covered auto symbols were selected. Symbol 1 for liability is the answer on almost every account.

What the policy covers

The pieces, and what each one is actually for.

Symbol 1

Any auto liability

Bodily injury and property damage from vehicles you own, hire, borrow, or do not own. The broadest liability trigger available.

Symbols 8 and 9

Hired and non-owned

Rented vehicles and employee owned vehicles used for company business. Every business with an employee running errands has this exposure.

Physical damage

Comprehensive and collision

Damage to your own units. Stated amount versus actual cash value matters on specialty and upfitted vehicles.

Coverage

Uninsured motorist

California's minimum limits are low and a meaningful share of drivers carry nothing. Rejecting UM in writing is a decision, not an oversight.

Endorsement

Trailer interchange and cargo

For motor carriers hauling under interchange agreements or moving customer property.

Endorsement

Drive other car and rental reimbursement

Coverage for owners driving personal vehicles, plus downtime replacement units.

What underwriters look at first

Auto submissions get declined on the driver list before anyone looks at the vehicle schedule.

  • MVRs pulled within ninety days on every driver, with a written standard for what disqualifies.
  • Drivers under twenty five or over seventy, and anyone with a major violation inside three years.
  • Radius of operation and whether any unit crosses state lines, which changes filings and pricing entirely.
  • Telematics or dashcams. Carriers now credit them and increasingly require them above a certain unit count.
  • Personal use by employees and family members, which is the exposure most often left off the application.

How we build the submission

Work the inputs before working the market.

Step 01

Clean the driver list

We run the roster against your own hiring standard before an underwriter does, and remove or address the drivers that will draw a decline.

Step 02

Rebuild the vehicle schedule

VINs, values, radius, and use codes verified. Stale schedules with sold units still on them cost real premium.

Step 03

Document the safety program

Written fleet policy, MVR frequency, post accident procedure, and telematics data. This is what earns a credit rather than a surcharge.

Step 04

Market by unit count

Under ten units, twenty five units, and true fleet all belong to different carriers. Sending a fleet to a small business market wastes the renewal cycle.

Questions we get

Straight answers.

Do I need commercial auto if employees drive their own cars?

You need hired and non-owned liability at minimum. Your business gets named in the suit regardless of whose car it was, and a personal auto policy does not protect the company.

Why is my fifteen passenger van so hard to insure?

Rollover history and occupant count. Some carriers exclude them outright. Others will write them with a driver training requirement. This is a class where the right market matters more than the right price.

Can telematics actually lower my premium?

Yes, and the credit is now large enough to pay for the hardware on most fleets. It also settles disputed liability claims quickly, which protects your loss ratio going into the next renewal.
